Browser-local limits

Canvas-based export is browser dependent. PNG is broadly available; JPEG/WebP quality and support can vary, and metadata may not be preserved through canvas re-encoding.

JPG and WEBP do not have identical capabilities

Changing the container requires the browser to decode the source pixels and encode a new file. That can alter file size and metadata even when the image looks similar. Lossy source artifacts cannot be recovered by converting to a lossless format, while conversion to a lossy format can introduce new compression artifacts.

Check transparency, quality, and metadata

PNG can preserve alpha transparency; ordinary JPEG cannot, so transparent pixels need a background when exporting to JPEG. WebP can be lossy or lossless and can support alpha depending on the encoder path. Browser canvas export commonly drops EXIF and other source metadata, and color-management behavior can vary. Compare the final dimensions, transparency, visual detail, and file size before replacing an original asset with the converted copy.
