Practical guide and verification
Percent difference is symmetric
Percent difference is often used to compare two values without treating either one as the original baseline. A common formula divides the absolute difference by the average magnitude of the two values, then expresses the result as a percentage.
Do not confuse it with percent change
Percent change is directional and uses an initial value as the denominator. Percent difference is generally symmetric, so swapping the two inputs should not change the result.
Common mistake
The formula becomes problematic when the comparison denominator is zero or when signed values make the meaning of the average ambiguous. Decide whether the domain expects magnitudes, signed quantities or another error metric.
