Practical guide and verification

Mono conversion combines channels

A stereo-to-mono mix normally combines left and right channels with gain management. Simply adding full-level channels can raise peaks and clip, while discarding one side can lose content that exists only on the other channel.

Phase matters

Left and right signals can partially cancel when summed if they contain opposite-polarity or phase-shifted components. Wide stereo effects are especially worth checking after downmixing.

Common mistake

Do not judge compatibility only from average loudness. A mono result can have acceptable level yet lose a vocal, ambience or low-frequency component because of cancellation.

Codec and measurement boundaries

Browser decoding differs across Safari, Chrome, Firefox, iOS, and Android. Rendered edits are exported as WAV unless a tool explicitly states another supported container. Loudness analysis is a practical BS.1770-style estimate rather than a certified meter, and sample clipping checks do not replace true-peak oversampling.

Check phase before downmix
