The years/months/days result is a calendar decomposition rather than a decimal-year estimate. It uses the same Gregorian month-length and leap-year rules as the Age Calculator.
An age difference can be reported as total days or as calendar years, months, and days. Those views answer different questions because month lengths and leap years vary. Keep both original dates visible, confirm which date is earlier, and use the calendar breakdown only after verifying the source dates and timezone assumptions.
For contracts, school eligibility, employment, or medical records, the relevant dates may be enrollment, service, or event dates rather than birthdays. Label the dates by meaning before calculating. A mathematically correct gap can still answer the wrong question when the chosen endpoints do not match the decision being made.
Differences near February 29, the end of a month, or a daylight-saving transition can look surprising when converted between units. Calendar arithmetic should preserve date semantics rather than assume every month has the same length. When precision matters, keep the raw dates and total-day difference with the human-readable calendar result.
