Chicago Citation Studio — 18th edition

Build one source record and switch between Chicago Notes & Bibliography and Author-Date without re-entering metadata. DOI uses Crossref; ISBN uses Open Library only when requested. Imported metadata stays editable.

Chicago 18 accuracy checkpoints built into this Studio

The 18th edition (2024) changed several source-citation rules. This page intentionally separates Notes & Bibliography from Author-Date instead of mixing their punctuation.

Author thresholdsBibliography/reference lists show up to six authors; with more than six, the first three are followed by et al. Notes and author-date text citations use both authors for two, but first author + et al. for three or more.
BooksPublication place is no longer required. Publisher and year remain part of the standard book pattern.
Edited-book chaptersThe chapter page range is no longer required in bibliography/reference-list entries; use the locator for the specific page cited in a note or author-date citation.
DOI before ordinary URLWhen a DOI is present it is normalized to https://doi.org/ and takes priority over an ordinary URL.
Undated web pagesAuthor-Date uses n.d.; include an access or archive date when the page has no publication/revision date.
Project switchingEach local project stores its Chicago system so saved sources re-render together rather than preserving stale output from another system.

For unusual materials, archives, Indigenous sources, AI-generated material, datasets, and publisher-specific exceptions, check the governing official or institutional guidance before submission.

Use one Chicago source record across both systems

Create or import the metadata once, then switch between Notes & Bibliography and Author-Date. The Studio keeps full notes, shortened notes, bibliography entries, reference-list entries, parenthetical citations, and narrative forms together so a project does not drift between styles.

Lookup and import boundary

DOI lookup requests Crossref and ISBN lookup requests Open Library. The page does not promise arbitrary webpage scraping because browsers cannot reliably infer publication facts from every site. BibTeX and RIS imports remain editable for the same reason.

Privacy and portability

Projects are browser-local. Portable links place a limited source payload in the URL hash; anyone receiving the link can read that embedded metadata. Use Project JSON when the source set is too large or should be transferred as a file.
