Ellipsoid Volume Calculator

Enter semi-axes a, b, and c to calculate ellipsoid volume and an approximate surface area.

—Ellipsoid volume
—Approx. surface area
—Equivalent cube side
V = 4πabc / 3

Use consistent measurements and valid geometric assumptions

Keep linear inputs in a consistent unit, verify that side lengths or coordinate points can form the stated shape, and treat sketches as explanatory unless explicitly marked to scale. Coordinate formulas can become unstable for nearly degenerate shapes, so invalid or nearly collinear inputs are rejected rather than silently returning misleading values.

How to use this Ellipsoid Volume Calculator

Enter semi-axes a, b, and c to calculate ellipsoid volume and an approximate surface area.

Practical guide and verification

Use the tool first, then apply these checks to verify the inputs, interpret the result, and hand it off without displacing the primary workflow.

Confirm whether the inputs are semi-axes or full diameters

The ellipsoid volume formula uses semi-axis lengths a, b, and c. If your measurements are full width, depth, and height, each must be divided by two before applying that form of the equation. Check the labels in the tool and the source drawing so a diameter is not accidentally treated as a radius-like semi-axis.

Keep every axis in the same unit

Multiplying three lengths means a unit mismatch is magnified into the cubic result. Convert inches, centimeters, meters, or other measurements into one consistent length unit before calculating. The resulting volume then carries the corresponding cubic unit, such as cm³ or m³.

Use the sphere case as a quick verification

When all three semi-axes are equal, the ellipsoid formula reduces to the familiar sphere volume four-thirds times pi times radius cubed. Testing an equal-axis example is a useful sanity check when transcribing measurements or verifying a spreadsheet formula based on the calculator.

Do not use the ideal ellipsoid model for arbitrary shapes

Many tanks, biological objects, earthworks, and manufactured parts are only approximately ellipsoidal. A precise arithmetic result does not remove shape-model error. If the boundary deviates substantially from an ellipsoid, use measured sections, CAD volume, displacement, or another geometry method appropriate to the object.
