Grade Percentage Calculator

Calculate percentage, points missed, and a reference letter grade from any earned/possible point pair.

—Percentage
—Points missed
—Score fraction

Grading scales, rounding rules, extra-credit policies, dropped-score rules, and weighted GPA systems vary by school and course. Match the settings to your syllabus or institution before relying on a result.

Percentage first, letter grade second

The core result is earned points divided by possible points. Any letter grade shown is a reference scale only; schools can use different cutoffs, weighting, rounding and extra-credit policies. Use the percentage in the grading system that actually applies to the course.

Practical guide and verification

Use the tool first, then apply these checks to verify the inputs, interpret the result, and hand it off without displacing the primary workflow.

Start with the gradebook denominator

Percentage equals earned points divided by possible points only when both numbers belong to the same point pool. Dropped items, weighted categories, extra credit, and ungraded assignments can change the denominator used by the course. Match the gradebook model before interpreting a simple points percentage as the official course grade.

Use points missed as a consistency check

Earned points plus missed points should reconcile with points possible in an ordinary no-extra-credit case. If they do not, check whether bonus points, partial credit, or excluded questions are involved. This small arithmetic cross-check is useful when copying scores from a test report into another planning tool.

Keep the letter grade separate from the percentage

A percentage is arithmetic; a letter grade depends on a scale. Schools can use plus/minus bands, custom cutoffs, mastery levels, curves, or no letter grades at all. Treat the displayed letter as a reference only and use the raw percentage with the grading scale that actually applies.

Check rounding only at the policy-defined stage

A value such as 89.95 percent can be treated differently depending on whether the course rounds, truncates, or keeps full precision. Avoid rounding each intermediate point calculation unless the syllabus says to do so. Keep the unrounded percentage for evidence and apply the institution’s rounding rule at the final stage.
