Represent → compare → factor → verify

Equivalent fraction forms should preserve the same rational value, and number-theory relationships should agree across factors, remainders, GCF, multiples, and prime structure. Use the connected tools to verify rather than relying on an isolated answer.

Practical guide and verification

Reduce input fractions before comparing structure

Equivalent fractions can hide shared factors in their denominators. Reducing each fraction first is not required to compute an LCD, but it makes the arithmetic easier to inspect and can reveal accidental input duplication or sign mistakes.

The LCD is the least common multiple of the denominators

For fractions with integer denominators, find the least common multiple of those denominators. The numerators do not determine the LCD; they matter later when each fraction is rewritten with the common denominator.

Use prime factors to verify the result

Factor each denominator and retain the highest power of every prime that appears. Multiplying those powers should reproduce the LCD. This gives an independent check when the denominators are large or have several shared factors.

Rewrite each fraction before adding or comparing

Once the LCD is known, multiply numerator and denominator by the same factor needed to reach that denominator. Do not change only the denominator, because that changes the value of the fraction.

Keep exact fractions until the final step

Decimal approximations can obscure whether two rewritten fractions are exactly equivalent. Preserve integer numerators and denominators through the common-denominator work, then convert to decimal only if the downstream task actually needs it.
