Use a pie chart when the question is part-to-whole

Keep the slice count small

Angle comparison becomes difficult as categories multiply. Top-N and small-slice grouping are available so the chart can stay readable without changing the source rows.

Do not hide the denominator

The visible total, exact percentage table and optional source note stay next to the chart so a polished export is not separated from the values that created it.

Prefer bar charts for close comparisons

When the main task is ranking similar categories, comparing many items or showing change over time, a bar or line chart usually communicates more accurately.

Accessible color is not enough

A colorblind-safe palette helps, but the exported SVG also carries a text description and every slice retains a label/value/percentage title. Keep the underlying data table with the chart when accuracy matters.

Truth boundary: this browser-local studio visualizes the values you provide; it does not validate whether categories belong to one meaningful whole, verify an external source, infer missing data, or make statistical conclusions. CSV/TSV/TXT/JSON/XLSX are supported locally; native PDF import/export, cloud collaboration, AI-generated data and continuously updated external datasets are intentionally outside this browser-local editor.

Design controls that preserve the data

Switch between pie, donut, half-donut and exploded views; choose label and legend styles; apply colorblind-safe, print or custom palettes; sort the visible slices; and combine small categories into an explicit Other row without overwriting the original source table.

Publication checks before export

The readability audit flags too many slices, multiple tiny slices, one overwhelmingly dominant slice, zero totals and negative values. These are communication checks rather than statistical certification.

Private local handoff

SVG, 2× PNG, CSV and Project JSON are created locally. Explicit snapshots stay in local storage, and the settings-only share URL excludes chart data, titles, source notes and snapshots.

When another chart is better

Use a bar chart when exact ranking matters, a line chart for change over time, and a 100% stacked chart when multiple part-to-whole groups must be compared. A pie chart is strongest when a small set of non-negative categories forms one clear whole.
