These pages treat ratios as mathematical proportional relationships. A real-world application can still require compatible units and context before two quantities should be compared directly.
A ratio can be written as a fraction, but context still matters
The ratio a:b corresponds mathematically to a/b when b is nonzero. Reducing both terms by a common factor gives an equivalent ratio and the same fraction value. If the ratio describes parts of a whole, however, a:b can also mean that a is a/(a+b) of the combined total rather than a/b of the second part.
Check which interpretation the problem uses
Use a/b for a direct comparison of the first quantity to the second. Use part-to-whole conversion when the question asks for the first share of the total. Keep units compatible before forming the ratio, preserve sign intentionally, and avoid a zero denominator. Converting the simplified fraction back to a ratio is a quick consistency check.
