Surface Area Calculator

Choose a cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, cone, or sphere and calculate total surface area with the formula shown.

Surface areaSquare units

Use consistent measurements and valid geometric assumptions

Keep linear inputs in a consistent unit, verify that side lengths or coordinate points can form the stated shape, and treat sketches as explanatory unless explicitly marked to scale. Coordinate formulas can become unstable for nearly degenerate shapes, so invalid or nearly collinear inputs are rejected rather than silently returning misleading values.

Turning geometric area into a real estimate

Choose the shape model before entering measurements

A cylinder, cone, hemisphere, pyramid, and prism use different surface components. Decide whether the real object matches the selected ideal geometry and whether bases are included before treating the result as material area.

Keep every length in the same unit

Surface area uses squared units, so mixing centimeters and meters creates a much larger error than the input difference suggests. Convert all linear dimensions first, then label the result as cm², m², in², or the matching squared unit.

Allow for waste when estimating material

Paint, fabric, sheet goods, insulation, and coatings usually need overlap, cut loss, seams, texture, or multiple coats. The geometric surface area is a baseline; apply the project-specific waste or coverage factor separately.

Open and closed shapes may need different areas

A tank, cone, cylinder, or hemisphere can be open on one side, while the ideal textbook formula may include every base. Check whether your selected shape represents the exposed surfaces you actually need. Subtract covered bases or hidden mating faces before turning the geometric result into paint, coating, or material quantity.
