About tip customs

Tip customs vary by place and situation. Preset percentages are convenience inputs, not a recommendation. Equal split assumes the bill, tax, and tip are shared evenly.

Tip and split formulas

tip = tip basis × tip rate ÷ 100
bill total = bill + tip
per person = bill total ÷ people

Example

For an $80 bill with a 20% tip, the tip is $16 and the total is $96. Split equally among four people, that is $24 per person.

Whether tipping is calculated before or after tax varies by place and preference; use the optional tax controls when that distinction matters.
