File handling notes

connects ZIP creation/extraction, archive inspection, GZIP, TAR/TAR.GZ extraction, ZIP merging, multi-ZIP extraction, splitting/joining, duplicate detection, renaming, folder summaries, file inventories, and file-type inspection without requiring a file upload where the browser APIs support the task.

Archive and safety boundaries

Browser memory can limit very large files. TAR extraction supports ordinary TAR/USTAR regular files and directories rather than every PAX/sparse/link edge case. Password-protected or uncommon ZIP compression methods can exceed JSZip support. Normalized download paths do not grant arbitrary filesystem write access.

Practical guide and verification

Use the product workflow above first. These notes add interpretation, verification and limits below the interactive result area.

Inspect the archive before extracting everything

A ZIP can contain many files, nested folders and names you did not expect. Review the entry list, sizes and paths first, then extract only what you need when selective extraction is available.

Treat suspicious paths as a security boundary

Archive entries that attempt to escape the destination folder with parent-directory segments or absolute paths are unsafe in a normal extractor. Browser-local extraction should still sanitize filenames and paths rather than assuming every ZIP entry is trustworthy.

Compressed size can hide a much larger expanded payload

A small archive can expand into a large amount of data. Compare compressed and uncompressed totals before loading a large ZIP into memory, especially on mobile devices where browser memory limits are tighter.

Password protection and encryption support varies

Not every browser ZIP library supports every encrypted archive format. A failure to open a password-protected file does not prove the archive is corrupt; confirm the encryption method and use a compatible extractor when necessary.

Verify important files after extraction

For documents or software assets that matter, open the extracted files and compare expected names, sizes or checksums with the source manifest when one exists. Successful decompression confirms structure, not that the contents came from a trusted publisher.
