Fuel Economy Converter

Convert common fuel-economy units locally using fixed unit relationships.

—US MPG
—UK MPG
—km/L
—L/100 km
—Fixed unit conversion only; this does not estimate a specific vehicle's real-world economy.
Automotive tolerance cluster

Calculate the nominal spec, then expose how real-world input spread can move it

Vehicle calculations are often exact only on paper. This cluster keeps the base result while making rolling radius, gearing, wheel measurements and performance-input sensitivity visible.

MPG and L/100 km move in opposite directions

Miles per gallon and km/L increase as efficiency improves, while L/100 km decreases. Converting to or from L/100 km therefore uses a reciprocal relationship rather than a simple multiplier. Keep US and Imperial gallons separate because they have different volumes.

Reading fuel-economy conversions

MPG and L/100 km are reciprocal scales

Higher MPG means better economy, while lower L/100 km means better economy. The conversion is therefore nonlinear; an MPG difference at the low end does not represent the same L/100 km change as the same MPG difference at the high end.

US and UK gallons are different

US MPG and UK MPG use different gallon volumes. Keep the chosen source unit with copied values, especially when comparing vehicle specifications from different countries.

Real consumption depends on the drive cycle

Temperature, speed, terrain, load, tire pressure, traffic, and charging behavior can move real-world consumption far from a brochure figure. Use conversion for unit equivalence, not as a prediction of a specific trip.

Keep energy type outside the unit conversion

MPG, km/L, and L/100 km describe liquid-fuel distance efficiency. Electric-vehicle consumption such as kWh/100 km is an energy-use measure and cannot be converted directly without an energy-equivalence assumption. Use an EV-specific efficiency calculator when comparing gasoline and electric drivetrains.
