Image Print Size Calculator

Enter pixel dimensions and PPI or load an image, compare several print-density scenarios, then check whether a chosen physical size has enough pixels.

Pixels → physical print size

Calculate how large the current raster can print at a chosen pixel density, then compare common PPI targets.

Target print → effective PPI

Check the actual pixel density you would get at a chosen physical size. The limiting value is the lower of horizontal and vertical PPI.

PPI describes raster pixels per physical inch. Printer hardware DPI and embedded image metadata are related concepts but are not the same quantity. Changing metadata alone does not add detail.

Print-density & target-size audit

Cross-check the source pixels against physical print size and the pixels required at a chosen print density.

Practical guide and verification

Pixels and print dimensions are linked by PPI

Print size in inches is pixel dimension divided by pixels per inch. Changing a metadata DPI/PPI tag without resampling does not create additional image detail.

Viewing distance changes requirements

A small photo held close may need more pixels per inch than a large poster viewed from several metres away. There is no single quality threshold appropriate for every print.

Common mistake

Do not confuse printer hardware DPI with image PPI. Printer dots and source-image pixels describe different parts of the printing process.

Browser-local limits

Canvas-based export is browser dependent. PNG is broadly available; JPEG/WebP quality and support can vary, and metadata may not be preserved through canvas re-encoding.
