Date span conventions & reverse verification

The headline calculator stays focused on months. This independent audit shows the same date pair under the counting conventions that commonly produce different answers across calculators and spreadsheets.

Keep the fast month answer above, then inspect complete calendar months, leftover days, month-end policy, decimal-month interpretations and recurring monthly anchors. Date-only UTC arithmetic keeps daylight-saving clock shifts out of this calendar calculation.

1. Dates & month-anchor policy

Choose how a start day such as the 29th, 30th or 31st advances into shorter months. Endpoint counting changes day-equivalent totals, not complete-month anchors.

3. Clamp vs preserve end-of-month

These policies agree for most dates but can diverge when a month-end origin crosses February or another shorter month. The difference stays visible instead of being hidden in a generic “months” number.

4. Month-cycle ledger

Audit each calendar-month anchor, cycle length and counted partial segment. Very long spans keep exact summary totals while the visible ledger is capped for responsiveness.

The ledger shows at most 260 segments (first 130 and last 130 for longer spans); headline totals remain exact.

5. Recurring monthly anchors

Build exact monthly, quarterly or custom month cadences from the earlier date under the selected anchor policy.

Planning/export is capped at 120 generated anchors per run. ICS contains all-day dates only; no clock time or time zone is invented.

6. Save, export & share

Save repeat-use spans in browser-local storage, move the workbench as JSON, or copy a content-light portable link. Batch labels and rows are never embedded in the share fragment.

Scope & trust boundary. This is a proleptic Gregorian, date-only calendar calculator. It does not decide billing proration, interest, legal notice periods, lease eligibility, payroll, benefits or jurisdiction-specific contract rules. It does not fetch holidays or infer time zones. Average-month and anchor-cycle decimals are secondary comparison views; complete calendar months remain the primary calendar answer.

How to calculate complete months between dates

Count how many calendar-month anchors can be advanced from the earlier date without passing the later date, then count the leftover days after the last complete anchor. This avoids pretending that every month is 30 days long and makes month-end behavior inspectable.

What happens to the 29th, 30th or 31st?

A requested day may not exist in a shorter destination month. The Studio exposes two common policies: clamp that day to the destination month’s last valid date, or preserve end-of-month when the original start date itself is month-end. The side-by-side comparison shows when those rules diverge.

Why are there two decimal-month values?

The average-month view divides elapsed days by 365.2425/12 and is a continuous comparison. The anchor-cycle view starts with complete calendar months, then adds the fraction of the current calendar-month cycle that has elapsed. Both are explicitly secondary to the complete-month count.

What does include end date change?

Endpoint conventions change day-equivalent totals only. They do not move the complete-month anchor. This matters when comparing calendar-month tenure with a count of calendar dates in a reporting window.

Recurring billing and renewal anchors

The schedule builder advances from the earlier date in exact calendar-month steps under the chosen anchor policy. Export CSV for analysis or all-day ICS for a calendar. The tool does not calculate money, prorate invoices, or decide contractual due dates.

Batch month-span checks

Use the batch audit to apply one explicit month policy across up to 200 date pairs. Labels and rows stay local and are excluded from portable share links. If the dates affect a legal, billing or financial obligation, verify the applicable policy with the governing contract or authority.
