Use the receipt’s actual taxable base and combined rate. If different items have different rates or exemptions, split them into separate groups instead of forcing one rate across the whole basket. Register line-item rounding can also differ by a cent from invoice-level math.

Reverse a known rate mathematically

This is an arithmetic back-calculation from a tax-inclusive total. It does not discover which jurisdiction or product tax rule applied.

How to use the Reverse Sales Tax Calculator

Enter the total paid and the sales tax percentage. The tool divides the tax-inclusive total by 1 + rate to estimate the original before-tax price, then reports the tax amount.

What the result means

This is a mathematical reverse calculation for a known rate.

Practical guide and verification

Use the tool first, then apply these checks to verify inputs, interpret the result, and hand it off without displacing the primary workflow.

Confirm that the entered total really includes one tax rate

Reverse tax math assumes the gross price equals pre-tax amount multiplied by one plus the entered rate. Fees, tips, bottle deposits, shipping, discounts, tax-on-tax rules, and mixed taxable or exempt items can break that model. Use the calculator only for the portion of a transaction that follows the stated inclusive-rate relationship.

Use the jurisdiction’s actual combined rate

Sales tax can combine state, county, city, district, or special rates, and product categories can be treated differently. Enter the rate that applied to the specific transaction rather than a general headline rate. If the receipt already separates tax, use that recorded amount as the stronger audit evidence instead of reconstructing it unnecessarily.

Expect small differences from line-item rounding

Merchants may round tax per line, per tax group, or once on the invoice total. Reversing a single rounded gross amount can therefore differ by a cent from a receipt that accumulated several rounded line taxes. Keep full precision during the calculation and compare against the merchant’s documented rounding method before treating a cent-level difference as an error.

Keep gross, net, rate, and reconstructed tax together

An auditable result includes the tax-inclusive total, rate, calculated pre-tax amount, and calculated tax amount. Copy or save all four values with the transaction context so another reviewer can reproduce the result. This is arithmetic support, not a determination of whether a transaction was legally taxable in a particular jurisdiction.
