Counts run locally in your browser. When available, word, sentence, and grapheme segmentation uses the browser’s Unicode-aware Intl.Segmenter; fallback rules are used on older browsers.

Word-length distribution & lexical audit

Go beyond a single mean with median length, lexical diversity, long-word share and exportable length buckets.

Core counting & writing metrics

Start with the broad counter that matches the question, then move to focused frequency, reading-time or syllable analysis. Specialist readability, repetition and writing-goal tools remain available from the full hub.

Practical guide and verification

Define a word before comparing texts

Average word length depends on tokenization. Hyphenated terms, apostrophes, numbers, URLs, emoji, and punctuation can be treated differently by different tools.

Interpretation

A higher average can indicate longer vocabulary, but it is not a direct measure of difficulty or writing quality. Sentence structure, familiarity, jargon, and audience knowledge matter too.

Use comparable samples

Compare texts processed with the same rules and similar purposes. A technical glossary and a conversational email can have very different averages for reasons unrelated to quality.

Tokenization sensitivity & word-length distribution audit

Average word length depends on what counts as a word. Compare three tokenization rules on the same text, then inspect median, 90th-percentile length, long-word share and a compact length histogram so readability comparisons do not hide a tokenization assumption.

The policies are intentionally different. “Letters only” splits hyphenated forms; the internal-punctuation policy keeps forms such as state-of-the-art together; whitespace mode keeps surrounding punctuation inside token length.

Text analysis with explicit counting semantics

The result distinguishes Unicode graphemes, code points, word/sentence boundaries, line endings or normalization where those details change the meaning of the count. Browser-local analysis stays live without treating approximate language heuristics as exact facts.
