Practical guide and verification
KB can mean two different scales
In decimal SI usage, one kilobyte is 1,000 bytes. In binary usage, 1,024 bytes is one kibibyte (KiB), although some interfaces still label that value “KB.” State the convention when precision matters.
Storage displays may disagree
Operating systems, drive vendors and network tools can use different decimal/binary conventions. Two displays can therefore show different numeric sizes for the same byte count without either changing the file.
Common mistake
Do not convert bits as though they were bytes. Network speeds are often stated in bits per second, while file sizes are commonly shown in bytes.
