Formula

Use C = (F − 32) × 5/9. For example, 68°F becomes 20°C because 68 − 32 = 36 and 36 × 5/9 = 20. Freezing water is 32°F = 0°C, while boiling water at standard atmospheric pressure is 212°F = 100°C.

Rounding and useful checks

Temperature conversions are exact before display rounding. For ordinary weather or room-temperature work, one or two decimal places is usually enough. If the Fahrenheit value is below −459.67°F, it is below absolute zero and is not physically meaningful as an ordinary thermodynamic temperature.

Common mistakes

Subtract 32 before multiplying by 5/9; reversing that order gives the wrong result. Also do not treat a temperature change as though it were an absolute temperature: a change of 1°F corresponds to 5/9°C, but converting a temperature reading requires the 32-degree offset.
