Practical guide and verification

Decide what “compare” means

Two PDFs can differ in visible text, page images, layout, metadata, annotations, form fields or internal object structure. A visual/text comparison does not necessarily prove that the files are byte-for-byte identical.

Normalize expected differences

Printing software, PDF producers and incremental saves can change metadata or object ordering without visibly changing the document. Decide which differences matter for the review before treating every structural change as significant.

Common mistake

Do not rely only on page thumbnails when small text, shifted elements or replaced images matter. Conversely, a checksum difference alone does not tell you what changed visually.
