Practical guide and verification
Use the exact international conversion
One international mile equals exactly 1,609.344 metres. Multiplying miles by that factor gives metres; dividing metres by the same factor reverses the conversion.
Keep statute miles separate from nautical miles
A nautical mile is 1,852 metres and is not interchangeable with the ordinary land mile used by this converter. Confirm the source unit before converting navigation or marine distances.
Use a simple anchor to verify direction
One mile should return 1,609.344 m. If the result is much smaller than the starting mile value, the conversion direction or unit may have been reversed.
Round to match the measured distance
An exact unit factor does not make an estimated route or odometer reading exact. Keep extra digits during calculation if useful, then round the displayed result to a precision supported by the source.
Separate unit conversion from route distance
This tool changes the unit of a numeric distance. It does not calculate road routes, map geometry, elevation change or travel time, so those quantities require separate data and assumptions.
Reverse the result when a handoff matters
For a copied or published conversion, divide the metre result by 1,609.344 and confirm that it returns the original mile value. This catches accidental edits, unit-label swaps and rounding choices that are too aggressive for the source measurement.
