Monochrome PWA Icon Generator

Monochrome manifest icon support is not universal. Keep ordinary any/maskable icons as fallbacks and test target platforms.

Choose an imageThe output uses black RGB with alpha as the shape mask. Manifest purpose="monochrome" support is not universal; keep ordinary icons too.

Monochrome PWA Icon: Manifest, Safe-Zone & Fallback Audit

Audit a generated monochrome PWA icon for manifest purpose, 512px output, safe-zone guidance and any/maskable fallback requirements.

Explicit icon-tool scope

The generated PNG is an alpha-mask style asset for manifest purpose="monochrome". Support varies, so ordinary any/maskable icons should remain available.

Browser-local processing

Create an alpha-mask style icon and matching purpose="monochrome" manifest entry. Artwork and selected files remain in this browser session.

Practical guide and verification

Use the tool first, then use these checks to interpret, verify and hand off the result without displacing the primary workflow.

Preview the icon at real launcher sizes

A monochrome source that looks clear at 512×512 can become muddy at small notification or shortcut sizes. Inspect the generated silhouette at several reduced sizes and confirm that the central mark remains recognizable without relying on fine internal detail.

Keep safe-zone and purpose metadata aligned

Maskable, any, and monochrome icon purposes have different platform expectations. Verify the manifest entry, safe-zone assumption, and fallback icon rather than using one asset for every purpose by habit. A browser accepting the manifest does not mean every platform will crop the icon the same way.

Check threshold changes against thin strokes

Thresholding can erase light details or merge nearby shapes. Adjust the threshold gradually and compare the resulting silhouette with the original mark. If critical strokes disappear, simplify the artwork or provide a purpose-specific source instead of forcing a photographic image into a monochrome icon.

Test the installed PWA, not only the downloaded PNG

The generator produces an asset and manifest snippet locally; it cannot prove how an installed app will display. After deployment, install the PWA on representative platforms, inspect launcher/notification surfaces, and verify that caching has not left an older icon in place.
