Convert acceleration units

Convert m/s², cm/s², ft/s², in/s², standard gravity, Gal, mph/s, and km/h/s. Standard gravity g₀ is exactly 9.80665 m/s².

Standard gravity

g₀ is a defined conventional reference, not a measurement of local gravitational acceleration at your location.

Practical guide and verification

Use the tool first, then apply these checks to verify inputs, interpret the result, and hand it off without displacing the primary workflow.

Verify that every unit represents acceleration, not speed

Acceleration describes change in velocity per unit time, so m/s², ft/s², g0, Gal, mph/s, and km/h/s can be converted on one dimension. A speed such as mph or km/h is not an acceleration until it is divided by a time interval. Keep the squared or per-second notation visible so a unit label is not accidentally copied into a speed field or vice versa.

Distinguish standard gravity from local gravitational acceleration

The symbol g0 refers to the conventional standard value 9.80665 m/s² used for unit conversion. Actual gravitational acceleration varies with latitude, altitude, and local conditions. Converting a measurement into g0 units does not claim that the local gravitational field exactly equals the standard value, and an accelerometer reading can also include device orientation and inertial effects.

Keep significant digits appropriate to the source measurement

Unit conversion can produce many decimal places even when the original sensor or stated value has limited precision. Preserve full internal precision for round-trip checks, then round the displayed result to a meaningful number of significant digits. If tolerances matter, convert the uncertainty or tolerance limits as well instead of reporting a precise central value with no indication of measurement quality.

Cross-check one known equivalence before batch use

A useful invariant is 1 g0 = 9.80665 m/s² and 1 Gal = 0.01 m/s². Verify a known pair and use the swap or all-units table to confirm the reverse conversion returns the starting value within floating-point rounding. For engineering or safety decisions, also verify the required unit definition in the governing standard, specification, or instrument documentation.
