Convert volumetric flow rate

Convert liters, cubic meters, US gallons, and cubic feet per unit time. US gallons are explicitly labeled so they are not confused with Imperial gallons.

Volumetric vs mass flow

This page converts volume per time only. Converting to mass flow requires fluid density, which can vary with material, temperature, and pressure.

Practical guide and verification

Use the interactive product above first. These notes add interpretation, verification and limits below the results and product controls.

Volumetric flow and mass flow are different quantities

Liters per minute and cubic meters per hour measure volume over time. Kilograms per second requires fluid density, so a direct conversion between volumetric and mass flow is impossible without an additional physical assumption.

Check the time basis as carefully as the volume unit

A factor-of-60 mistake is common when converting per second, per minute and per hour. Round-trip the converted value back to the original unit to catch an incorrect time-base selection.

Reference conditions can matter for gases

Gas volume depends on temperature and pressure. Standard cubic feet or normal cubic meters may refer to stated reference conditions, so verify those definitions before comparing a standardized gas flow with an actual volumetric flow.

Match precision to the source instrument

A converter can display many decimal places even when a flow meter is only accurate to a few percent. Keep enough digits to avoid intermediate rounding error, but report the final value at realistic measurement precision.
