EAN-8 structure and check digit
EAN-8 carries seven data digits plus one modulo-10 check digit. The seven body positions are weighted 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3 from the left; the check digit completes the sum to a multiple of ten. This Studio calculates the eighth digit from seven digits or verifies the supplied final digit when all eight are entered.
67 encoded modules, 81X with minimum quiet zones
The encoded core is 67 modules: start guard 3, four left characters 28, centre guard 5, four right characters 28 and end guard 3. EAN-8 uses 7X minimum quiet-zone planning on both sides, so the core plus those side quiet zones spans 81X before any surrounding layout space.
X-dimension, height and printer dots
For general retail POS, GS1 specification tables publish EAN-8 X-dimension planning values of 0.264 mm minimum, 0.330 mm target and 0.660 mm maximum, with 7X quiet zones left and right. The Studio converts the selected X-dimension to printer dots at 203, 300, 600 or 1200 DPI and reports the effective X-dimension after rounding to whole dots.
Colors, HRI and real print quality
Dark bars on a light background are the safe planning baseline, and all eight digits belong in the human-readable interpretation. Screen RGB contrast is not a barcode verifier: substrate reflectance, ink spread, bar-width growth, printer resolution, placement and physical scanning still determine whether a production label performs correctly.
GTIN assignment is separate from barcode rendering
Generating a symbol does not allocate a retail number. EAN-8/GTIN-8 identifiers are independently assigned; they are not shortened EAN-13 values. Before commercial use, confirm that the exact GTIN-8 is legitimately assigned to the product and accepted by the receiving marketplace or retailer.
