Treat the target size as a delivery constraint

A maximum part size is usually chosen for email, upload or storage limits. Leave headroom below a hard platform cap because file sizes can be displayed in decimal or binary units and downstream systems may add packaging or reject a part that lands exactly on the stated limit.

Expect page boundaries to constrain the split

PDF pages are indivisible in a page-preserving split. A single page that exceeds the maximum cannot be made smaller merely by choosing a lower part-size threshold; it may need image optimization, font cleanup or another compression workflow first.

Check every generated part before deleting the source

Open the first and last page of each part, confirm page order and count, and compare the final combined page count with the original. Preserve the source PDF until the destination system accepts all parts and the handoff is complete.

Do not assume equal-sized parts

Complex pages with images, fonts or embedded resources can contribute very different byte counts. The best valid partition may contain uneven numbers of pages, so judge the result against the maximum-size constraint and page continuity rather than equal page counts.
